Shall we change Fishers from a town to a City?

While the election has passed (and I thank all of those who worked on the campaign, supported me, or voted for me), one of the issues I ran on was that Fishers needed a City form of government.  That has not changed.  In keeping with that campaign promise, I plan on having exploratory meetings early in 2008 about what is needed to change Fishers into a city.  Generally speaking, this involves a petition drive which needs registered Fishers voters equalling 10% of those who voted in the last election for Secretary of State.   The most notable change is that we would have a Mayor.

NEWS RELEASE ON ANNEXATION, 10/25/07

According to an article appearing in the Noblesville Daily Times, http://http://www.county29.net/cms2/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=7436&Itemid=230, State Rep. Jeff Drozda, R-Westfield, is introducing an annexation reform bill to the General Assembly. According to the article, Indiana is one of only 6 states that permit forced annexation.

So folks, I guess that my position on involuntary annexation is not so odd after all. I applaud the efforts of two Republican leaders, State Senator Gard and State Rep. Drozda, both of whom represent parts of Hamilton County, for their wisdom and leadership in addressing a fundamentally unfair annexation process.

Indeed, it seems that the municipal governments of both Fishers and Carmel are out of touch with both what is right and fair, and also with the leaders of their own party. I call on the Fishers Town Council to withdraw their lawsuit against the County Commissioners and to withdraw the Geist involuntary annexation ordinances.

FISHERS TOWN COUNCIL vs. WILL OF THE MAJORITY

According to atGeist.com, Fishers' attorneys are filing for a court injunction this morning (10/18/07) to stop the Geist incorporation process.

Apparently, the incumbent Fishers Town Council will stop at nothing to keep the will of the majority from being determined. The only way to determine the will of the majority is to let the East-West Geist incorporation process go through, which can be defeated by a simple majority of 51% of the landowners.

The fact of the matter is, Fishers Town Council knows that they have made a terrible mess of the process, and are determined to proceed with legalized bullying regardless of cost. This will not end in the Hamilton Superior Court and perhaps not even in the Indiana Court of Appeals, at a cost of tens of thousands of dollars out of the pockets of Fishers' taxpayers, and even then, that will not be the end of it, there will be more court fights over annexation as well.

The sorry truth is, this could actually DELAY annexation, something that a lot of people have been throwing mud at Geist folks for.

This is a waste of money. This is legalized oppression of a process to determine the will of the people. In short, it is WRONG, despite any merits or lack thereof of either annexation or incorporation. And it will do nothing but fuel the neighbor vs. neighbor hatred that the Town Council started over this mess.

++++  The above was posted by me on a number of public forums.  I do not take this position lightly, or to pander for votes, but because I think it is RIGHT.  If you agree with me, and I do appreciate the support, please write, email, or call the members of the Fishers Town Council, tell them that you do not approve of this action, and to let the will of the majority be heard.   Greg Purvis 10/18/07
